Big brother turned into a friendly guard

Security cameras. Probably one of those products that are impossible to like. ’1984′, ‘Big-Brother’, ‘zero-tolerance’… putting a security camera is like screaming ‘this is not a save place, get out of here (and by the way, we’re watching you punk!)’. Let’s not get started about the design, like there is any design done to it anyway.

That’s what the Dutch Railway company must have thought as well and asked Fabrique to design a new camera. The result is a cute yellow ‘eye’ with a nice grey cap added to it giving a human touch to it. To me it looks a lot more friendly. Instead of a grumpy fat security guard watching every move I make on his CCTV I imagine now a good friendly cop watching the surroundings making sure I’ll be safely waiting for my train to come. No wonder the ‘big-brother’ feeling amongst travellers dropped from 34% to 12%.

Of course, we can still see the camera (with its bright yellow colour this new camera is even more visible) and still have the feeling somebody is watching us. But simply by giving it a more human appearance to which we can easily relate our perception of it have become a whole lot more positive.
